Being immunocompromised means your immune system doesn’t work as well as it should, which leaves you more at risk of developing infectious diseases.

I’ve been immunocompromised for most of my life, and the trouble it has caused me has been maddening.

The constant hospitalizations, Doctor appointments, blood tests, and medications, as well as the continual stress of being around large groups of people who may or may not be sick, is exhausting.

However, having a compromised immune system doesn’t mean we can’t stay healthy. There are things we can do to help prevent ourselves from infectious diseases.

To make it a little easier for you, I’ve researched 11 preventative steps you can take right now to aid in your quest for a healthier immune system.

11 Ways to Help Prevent Infectious Diseases

1. Eat Well.

To fight off infectious diseases, you need a tough immune system. Good eating habits such as consuming a balanced diet high in healthy nutrients and low in sugary, processed foods can keep your immune system at its finest.

2. Get Good Sleep.

Receiving adequate sleep can help keep your immune system strong. While sleeping, your body generates proteins called cytokines. Those proteins will help your body fight inflammation and illness.

To improve your sleep cycle, start by creating a nighttime routine that will support a good night’s rest. Also, receiving a good night’s sleep before and after getting a vaccine may help it work better.

3. Get Vaccinated.

Vaccines are essential in controlling infectious diseases like hepatitis A and B, polio, mumps, measles, whooping cough, and the flu. Whether you agree or not, vaccinations HAVE been proven to help save lives.

Make sure you and your family are up-to-date on all your shots. If you’re unsure about your vaccination status, check with your doctor.
