This week is Peripheral Neuropathy Awareness week (May 9th — 16th), and I wanted to write about a few different ways you’re able to manage this painful condition throughout the day.

I suffer from Peripheral Neuropathy in my legs and feet and have been for many years. It’s a burning and tingling sensation that shoots through the affected area while also giving off a stabbing feeling at the same time.

The Mayo Clinic describes Peripheral Neuropathy as a result of damage to the nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord (peripheral nerves), which often causes weakness, numbness, and pain, usually in your hands and feet. It can also affect other areas of your body.

According to The National Spine and Pain Centers, people with neuropathic pain spend over $100 billion on doctor visits every year. Trying to find the correct type of medication to help relieve your nerve pain is a daily struggle.

Depending on the underlying cause, some neuropathies are curable, that is, if the cause of neuropathy is also curable.

Sadly, for many people, once they finally get a diagnosis of neuropathy, there is a range of permanent damage that medical treatment can’t fix.

What sucks is that I have the kind of neuropathy that is uncurable, which means I’ll be living in pain for the rest of my life, but that doesn’t have to stop me from living a good life.

Even though doctors can’t cure my neuropathy, it can still be treated with the proper medications, procedures, and changes in lifestyle which will help relieve some of the pain that I’m experiencing.

My 5 Recommendations on How to Manage Peripheral Neuropathy

The recommendations listed below can help you manage your Peripheral Neuropathy:

  1. Take care of your feet
  2. Quit smoking
  3. Eat healthy meals
  4. Massage your feet
  5. Improve your sleep

Take care of your feet:
